Join CARE, Inc. in “Go Red” Day on the First Friday in February!

If you have not yet heard about National “Go Red” Day, this is a tradition that has been set aside every year on the first Friday of the month of February. This year, National Wear Red Day will take place on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015.

The purpose of this nationally-celebrated awareness activity is to make people aware that heart disease is not just a man’s disease, and that one out of every three women die of strokes and heart disease. Sponsored by the American Heart Association, the National Wear Red Day is one way they hope to get the message across that people can change their lifestyle and habits to live well and put an end to heart disease.

Heart disease is actually a #1 killer of women, especially middle-aged and older women. A lot of people have the misconception that breast cancer is the leading killer, and although it is a very high and dangerous statistic, the heart disease is one of those more “silent killers” that leave people whirling in confusion and lack of understanding.

The “Go Red” mantra is a movement that both women and men can participate in. If everyone in the workplace embraces this day and participates, it does help to spread the word to others who might ask, “Why is everyone wearing red today?” and by doing so, it also helps to get the thought process moving in a new direction of health. There is strength in numbers, whether it is co-workers, or siblings, daughters and mothers, groups of friends and teammates.

There is an abundant source of facts and statistics about heart disease in women, including many myths surrounding the disease. If you want to learn more about “Go Red” or about the most recent findings about women’s heart disease statistics, visit the American Heart Association website, which has a special page dedicated to this topic.
